Last month, 35 founders took the Founder Energy assessment.
I've read every single response.
Here's what stood out the most: 45% came back depleted or in crisis.
These are founders running AI companies, SaaS platforms, and marketplaces. Real businesses with real traction. Companies with brand names you'd recognize if I could share them.
On paper, they're winning. But almost half of the founders are running on empty.
This is the pattern I've been describing for years. The metrics look fine. The founder is not. And nobody sees it, because success is the best possible camouflage for depletion.
1. Can you switch off at night?
If you only remember one stat from this newsletter, make it this one: across all respondents, the single most common gap was that most founders can't switch off.
Not "struggle to." Can't.
When we asked how easily they disengage from work, mentally, not just physically, the majority answered "only with effort" or "I can't, ever."
A small handful could disconnect on a schedule, deliberately, like flipping a switch. Those founders, without exception, scored highest on everything else too.
Founders wear always-on as a badge of honour. I did too, for years. Over time, I saw the toll it took on my health, relationships and happiness. Ultimately, it led to a divorce.
2. Founder Sleep is the #1 predictor of company success
Among the founders who completed the assessment, the majority reported waking up not restored.
These founders are tired by default. .
Only two out of thirty-five said they sleep well most nights. One founder stood out entirely: fully reset most mornings, and it showed in their answers everywhere else. Higher clarity. Higher energy. Less foggy decision-making.
I want to be clear about what this means, because it's easy to hear "sleep more" and tune out.
Sleep is the mechanism your body uses to actually recharge the battery. Sleep restores your body and clears the cache inside your mind. Your job is to make decisions. Sleep is what enables you to make them.
3. Purpose vs pressure
The third pattern is the hardest to see from the outside.
When we asked founders whether they were operating from purpose or from pressure, nearly two-thirds said pressure. More deadlines, more expectations, more "next quarter has to be better than this one," and less connection to why they started the company in the first place.
A small minority described themselves as purpose-led. And those same founders, again without exception, reported the highest energy and the clearest thinking of the whole cohort.
Pressure and purpose can produce the exact same quarter. Same revenue. Same growth rate. Same board deck.
From the outside, nobody can tell the difference. From the inside, one is sustainable, and the other is a countdown clock.
I sat with a founder a few months ago who had just closed a strong round. Growing fast. Team firing on all cylinders. By every external measure, winning. He told me he couldn't remember the last time he'd had an original idea. His decisions felt like they were coming from somewhere foggy. That he felt, in his words, “nothing”. Not stressed. Not excited. Nothing.
That's what pressure without purpose does eventually. It drains you to the point of failure.
AI makes these trends worse
The largest single group in this data set is founders of AI companies. The pace is unforgiving. Everything is moving so fast. AI founders feel that they need to disrupt themselves before they get disrupted. They are operating from fear. This is not a sustainable energy source.
How to fix these issues
I keep coming back to the same formula because it remains true: (Energy × Clarity) ^ Inspiration = growth rate.
It doesn't matter how good your product is or how strong your team is. The company reflects back whatever state the founder is actually in.
A depleted founder creates a depleted company, even while the revenue chart still points up and to the right. Especially then, because that's exactly when nobody, including you, thinks to check. Until it’s too late…
Where to go from here
Most founders in this data set had never actually measured their energy before taking our assessment. They knew their MRR to the dollar. They couldn't tell you their own energy score within twenty points.
Take the Founder Energy assessment. It takes about three minutes and tells you, specifically, whether you're thriving, managing, depleted, or in crisis, and which of the underlying deficits (energy, clarity, recovery, presence, purpose) is actually driving it.
If what you read here felt familiar, let’s talk. A Founder Alignment Call isn't a sales pitch. It's thirty minutes to look honestly at where Founder Deficit Disorder might be showing up in your specific situation, and whether the Limitless framework is actually a fit.
